It was in the mid-1990's when the Philippine Air Force was close to acquiring a modern multirole fighter. The most lucrative of the offered deals was a squadron of F-16's from the USAF. Sadly, changing priorities and the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis promptly closed this opportunity. The service had to continue using its aging F-5A fleet, finally retiring them in 2005. Even today, enthusiasts lament this dire situation. The current jury rigged S-211's are woefully inadequate for the air defense role.

The Viper would have made an ideal choice for Philippine defense needs. Even a fully armed squadron or two would at least make the country on par with regional neighbors. The PAF has never been ashamed in courting the F-16, it even goes without saying.
